Were the Developers wrong when they built Clementi Park?
A Collective Sale Committee has been formed to consider en bloc sale of this lovely estate.
The voices claiming that this estate is old and expensive to maintain will now grow louder among those who want to persuade a sale.
My dear friends and neighbours before we get carried away with reasons and excuses to sell, do remember, one size does not fit all. Each of us has a different expectation of what it takes to make us happy and each of us values "home" differently.
During the EOGM, there were some sweeping statements and dismissive references to overly sentimental stayers and the waste of unutilised space within this estate. Someone even commented that the original developers were wrong not to have fully utilised our expansive green spaces!
Our homes are an important reflection of our identity, our values and what we stand for. There is nothing wrong with feeling sentimental and loving our home and the vast green spaces. There is nothing wrong with wanting to avoid having to use the proceeds of an en bloc sale to settle for high density, cramped living.
In Singapore land is so precious. Spacious living is a true luxury and becoming increasingly rare and less affordable.
Clementi Park is a freehold estate and the value of our land will continue to go up over time. Cashing out on your home now may work out to be a windfall for only a few but not all of us.
If we throw our weight behind treasuring what we have and maintaining this estate well, it will stand tall and graceful for a long long time. Let us embrace the beauty of this estate and Save Clementi Park!
